Phalaris canariensis
Family Poaceae. The plant got its name because its seeds are used to feed songbirds.
It is cold-hardy, light-loving and undemanding as to soil. An annual 40 - 100 cm tall, with erect stems. Dense large panicles 3 - 5 cm long consist of small spikelets without awns. The inflorescences resemble small cones. Flowers in July - August. Propagated by seeds. To obtain 100 plants you need 0.3 - 0.5 g. Sow in spring when the soil warms, in clumps at a distance of 20 - 25 cm. Seedlings appear 10-15 days after sowing. Watering is needed at the beginning of growth and when the soil dries out; it is undemanding in care.
