Family Poaceae. Native to the entire temperate zone of Eurasia and North America.

In cultivation - only the variegated form picta (variegata). A long-rhizomed perennial grass 90-120 cm tall. Leaves are linear, up to 2 cm wide, with white or cream stripes. Leaves and stems do not droop even during severe frosts, although they lose their color. Spikelets are gathered into dense spike-like panicles up to 20 cm long. Prefers moist or wet soil, but is drought-tolerant. Spreads rapidly and can be weedy. Long and widely cultivated in landscape parks as a groundcover plant. Propagated by division of the clump. Easy to grow from seed, but vegetative propagation is easier. Winter-hardy without cover.
