Back to catalogue

Family Poaceae (grasses). Grows predominantly on more or less dry meadows from the tundra to the subtropical zone in Europe, North Africa and Asia; in the mountains — up to the subalpine belt. Perennial plants 25–120 cm tall, with short creeping rhizomes. Stems erect, usually with the lowest internode tuberously thickened. Leaf blades 0.3–1 cm wide, flat.

Panicles spike-like, very dense, 4–12 cm long, of a regular cylindrical shape retained even when the panicle is bent; spikelets 0.2–0.3 cm long, strongly laterally compressed, one-flowered; glumes equal to the spikelet, with rigidly ciliate keels, at the apex with a short straight awn or point; the lower lemma slightly shorter than the spikelet, without an awn; the upper lemma 1/4 shorter than the lower. 2n = 28, 36, 40, 42, 70, 84. Flowers in late spring–summer.
