Family Rosaceae. Occurs in the eastern part of North America.
Shrub up to 3 m tall with slightly spreading, drooping branches forming a dense, hemispherical crown. Leaves 3-5-lobed, rounded-elliptic, up to 4 cm, with a larger, elongated central lobe, serrate-toothed along the margin, green above, lighter beneath, sometimes slightly pubescent. Flowers up to 1.2 cm, white or pink, with red stamens. Fruits - aggregate, inflated leaflets, very showy, changing color from light green to reddish as they ripen. In cultivation since 1864.
