Appearance: a vine, 15–18 m long, very dense, lateral shoots horizontal or spreading, tendrils with suction pads, very fast-growing, 80–200 cm per year.
Flowers: inconspicuous, yellow-green inflorescences, July–August.
Fruits: bluish-black berries, pea-sized, poisonous.
Leaves: variable in shape, initially heart-shaped, pointed, then three-lobed, later compound, of three leaflets, reddish when unfolding, glossy green in summer, in autumn from yellow-orange to scarlet.
Requirements: sun/partial shade, relatively winter-hardy, undemanding, wind-resistant.
Soils: relatively dry or fresh, on any slightly fertile soils.
