The variety P. a. australis has 8 central spines of red color and bright red flowers. P. a. elegans - central spines are not pronounced - all spines are thin, about 2 cm long, whitish in color. P. a. vulgaris - 6-10 central spines, white-yellow, half of them with red-brown tips, flowers up to 5 cm in diameter.
