Back to catalogue

Fern (Paporotnik) is an elegant, perennial plant whose leaves have a variety of forms. It is, truly, a worthy rival to all kinds of palms as well as other evergreen plants. The most popular types include Adiantum ("Maidenhair") and Nephrolepis. Adiantum is an enchanting plant, a small wonder. At the same time, it is very ancient. Thus, representatives of the fern family are rightfully considered among the most beautiful of houseplants. In turn, ornamental horticulture distinguishes several species of Adiantum that are not difficult to grow and care for.

Adiantum belongs to warm-room ferns. It should be grown at a temperature of no less than 17°C and no more than 22°C. Like all ferns originating from subtropical and tropical countries, Adiantum dislikes drafts and cold. At the same time, excessively high temperatures can make it susceptible to numerous pests and diseases. In such cases, the plant may not always be able to recover. Ferns should be placed in an area with diffused sunlight. It is important to remember regular watering and misting, avoiding soil drying out, and to feed with special fertilizers in spring and summer.

All of the above also applies to the following popular fern types: Polypodium aureum, Nephrolepis, Platycerium, Asplenium and others, which are equally graceful and delicate. Ferns should be repotted in spring after the first growth, preserving the root ball. At the same time, dried roots should be removed. Species adapted to cool rooms (for example: Pellaea, Polypodium (tuberculate)) are grown at temperatures of no less than 12°C and no more than 25°C. Such ferns require watering with lime-free water.

In addition, the soil for cold-loving ferns must always be moist. In any case, the care and cultivation of ferns directly depends on their origin. You can easily grow indoors, for example, ferns such as Davallia, Pteris cretica, Pellaea rotundifolia, Cyrtomium and others. Do not skimp on constant attention and care for your favorite plants, and they will repay you with indescribable beauty and true pride.

Ferns

Ferns (pteridophytes) appeared in the Devonian period of the Paleozoic era - about 400 million years ago. At that time there were entire forests of true giants. Today such tree-like ferns have practically disappeared. Modern representatives of the fern family are much smaller in size than their predecessors. There are more than 200 genera and almost 20,000 species of these plants. In the wild, ferns can be found on almost every continent: in forests, on trees and on rocks. They are a distinct biological group, reproduce by spores, and have pinnately divided leaves - fronds.

In the 19th century, horticulturists cultivated indoor ferns, and for two centuries they have been favorites among ornamental plants. As early as the Victorian era there was a fashion for growing them at home. These plants were a true treasure of the palaces and salons of that time. Therefore it is not surprising that ferns continue to decorate many apartments, houses, and hotels today. They are excellent for interior landscaping. However, it is best to choose plants whose origin is in tropical forests, since these ferns surpass their northern relatives in lushness and variety of forms. On our site we present ferns and photos of some popular species.
