Pandanus
Pandanus
Family Pandanaceae. Pandanus requires quite a lot of space and looks impressive only as a solitary plant. Pandanus is often confused with bromeliads and dracaenas, because it can resemble both. Its long leaves have serrations along the edges, which on large leaves develop into sharp spines.
Pandanus is distinguished by aerial roots that support the trunk of the plant like props. Offshoot rosettes form around the trunk, which are better to cut off so that the main trunk becomes stronger and more robust.
In cultivation two species are grown: Pandanus Sander - pandanus sanderi with yellow longitudinal stripes on the leaf and Pandanus Veitch - pandanus veitchii with white longitudinal stripes on the leaf.
Temperature: Prefers warm rooms with a temperature around 20°C, winter minimum 16°C.
Light: Pandanus likes a bright location with strong diffused light and protection from direct sunlight.
Watering: Moderate in spring and summer - the soil should dry out, i.e. water approximately every other day; from autumn watering is reduced to twice a week. Pandanus does not tolerate excess water well, especially in winter during the dormant period.
Fertilization with liquid houseplant fertilizer from March to August every two weeks.
