Palma

Back to catalogue
The palm family. The fine representatives of this family are among the best ornamental foliage plants for growing indoors, although the best place for a palm is in a winter garden (conservatory). The native range of most palms is the tropics and subtropics.

In their native habitats palms grow to enormous sizes; for example, leaves can reach 15-17 m in length and 2 m in width. Nevertheless, many palms have proven to be quite undemanding, and their fairly slow growth allows them to be grown in home conditions.

Most palms grown indoors require a fairly spacious room. The best place is a living room or a hall. Even if your palm will not be large, it is usually a solitary plant and nothing should obstruct it.

Light: The room where a palm will grow should be bright with good sunlight. Bright diffused light is best, since not all palms tolerate direct sunlight well; most require some shading, for which a sheer curtain at the window is sufficient. However, placing them in a dark corner of the room is also unacceptable.

Temperature: Palms of tropical origin require moderately warm or warm rooms in winter. Palms native to the subtropics are better kept in cool rooms during winter. All palms tolerate drafts poorly; be especially wary of cold air when airing the room in winter through a small window. Palm roots are very sensitive to cold, so pots with palms should not be placed on a cold windowsill or on marble floor tiles.

Warm-room palms - арека, кокос, кариота, хамедорея, акантофеникс, феникс Робелини - require high room temperature and air humidity.

Moderate-room palms - ховеи (Бельмора, Форстера), кокос Боннети, геонома, клиностигма, рапалостилис, рапис, сабаль и др.
