Pachystachys

Pachystachys

Back to catalogue
Family Acanthaceae. Native to the tropical regions of the Americas. These are evergreen perennial shrubs. Only one species is cultivated.

Yellow pachystachys - Pachystachys lutea - growing to about 50 cm tall. On rather thin stems, oppositely arranged are large ovate, pointed at the tip and slightly wrinkled dark green leaves up to 10 cm long.

Spike-like inflorescences up to 10 cm long with yellow (or red) bracts are the main decorative feature of the plant. The flowers themselves are white, about 5 cm long, with a very attractive shape. Pachystachys blooms from late spring to autumn — which means the yellow bracts remain for a long time, although the flowers themselves fall off quickly.

Temperature: Prefers warm rooms with a temperature of about 18-20°C, winter minimum 14°C.

Lighting: Pachystachys likes a bright location with strong diffused light and protection from direct sunlight in summer.

Watering: Abundant in spring and summer. In winter water moderately, allowing the soil to dry slightly, but avoiding complete drying out.

Fertilization: Feed with a liquid fertilizer for houseplants from April to August every two weeks.

Humidity: Pachystachys likes frequent and regular spraying during the spring-summer period. You can place the plant on a tray with water, but the roots should not be in the water.
