Root system: superficial, forms suckers, sensitive to compaction.

Requirements: partial shade/shade, cool moist sites, relatively hardy, sensitive to wind.

Soils: well-drained, fresh or moist, acidic or slightly alkaline, does not grow on heavy soils.
