Triangular Oxalis

Oxalis triangularis

Back to catalogue

Family Oxalidaceae. Under too bright light or, conversely, dull, overcast weather, as well as before nightfall, leaf blades fold and droop.

Repotting: every 1-2 years into standard-sized pots

Dormancy period: from October to February the rhizome is kept almost without watering if the plant has dropped its leaves.

Winter care (October-February): optimal temperature - 5-10°C

Watering: moderate.

Specific cultural requirements: at air temperatures not above 15°C tolerates dry indoor air; in the spring-summer period it is better grown outdoors.

Usage: recommended for growing indoors, except on north-facing windows; in winter gardens.

Propagation: by division of the rhizome when repotting; less often by seeds.

Problems in cultivation: with insufficient light and air temperatures above 20°C the petioles of the leaves become very elongated, and the leaf blades become very small; Oxalis does not bloom at temperatures above 15°C. It is necessary to increase air humidity, but spraying the leaves is not recommended; in winter it drops all or part of the leaves, and the degree of leaf drop largely depends on the conditions of care during this time of year.

Life form: rhizomatous plant.

Maximum size in cultivation: in height 15-25 cm

Decorative features: leaves, flowers.

Leaf color and shape: trifoliate, on weak long petioles, each leaflet angular, triangular, beetroot-colored with a lighter "tick" in the middle of each leaflet.

Flowering time: spring-summer or autumn-winter, depending on the cultivar and growing conditions

Flower and inflorescence form and size: the flowers are about 2 cm in diameter, in umbel-like inflorescences, opening 1-3 at a time.
