Deppe's Oxalis
Oxalis deppei
Family Oxalidaceae. In too bright light or, conversely, in dull, overcast weather, as well as before the onset of night, leaf blades fold and lower.
Repotting: annually in spring into standard-sized pots (20 cm diameter) with 3-5 bulbs at a depth of 1-5 cm (depending on size).
Dormancy period: from October to November the bulbs of Oxalis are kept without watering in dry substrate.
Winter care (October-February): optimal temperature - 8-10°C
Watering: no watering.
Specific cultural requirements: at air temperatures not above 15°C tolerates the dry indoor atmosphere; in summer it is useful to move outdoors to the garden or balcony.
Uses: recommended for growing indoors on bright windowsills; on balconies, terraces, in the garden.
Propagation: by bulbs when repotting; less often by seeds
Growing problems: with insufficient light and air temperatures above 20°C the leaf stalks become very elongated, and the leaf blades become very small; Oxalis does not flower at temperatures above 15°C. It is necessary to increase the air humidity, but spraying the leaves is not recommended; in winter it drops all or part of the leaves, and the degree of leaf drop largely depends on the conditions of cultivation at that time of year.
Life form: tuberous-bulbous plant.
Maximum size in cultivation: plant height 20-25 cm.
Ornamental features: leaves, flowers.
Leaf colour and shape: leaves on thin petioles up to 20 cm long, consisting of four leaflets, light green with a reddish-brown center
Flowering period: spring–summer or autumn–winter, depending on the cultivar and growing conditions
Flower and inflorescence shape and size: flowers star-shaped, in an umbel-like inflorescence, up to 2 cm in diameter, maroon-red.
