Back to catalogue

Family Orchidaceae. The genus includes about 100 species occurring in the cold, temperate and subtropical belts of the Northern Hemisphere.

All species are extremely ornamental and promising for introduction into cultivation.

Location and soil: partial shade is desirable. In open sites regular watering is required.

Soil: a non-acid loose substrate of a mixture of leaf mold, peat and sand (2:2:1). The surface of the substrate should be mulched annually with conifer needles. Addition of fresh manure to the soil is unacceptable. Moisture-loving, but does not tolerate overwatering.

Propagation: by seeds, self-seeding possible. Vegetatively propagated by separating the replacement tuberous root. Sometimes repeated separation and planting out of the developing tuberous roots is used (after separation of one of them the next begins to form). The first separation is carried out at the budding stage, subsequent ones (2-4) at intervals of 2-3 weeks. During the operation the roots and shoots are not damaged
