Operculicarya

Operculicarya

Back to catalogue
Family Anacardiaceae. Native to the island of Madagascar. Another name for Operculicarya is false Japanese pepper, because this plant is very similar to Zanthoxylum, a plant of the Rutaceae family. The resemblance is so strong that confusion has occurred among houseplant suppliers and on many Russian and foreign plant websites.

Operculicarya decaryi - Operculicarya decaryi - an evergreen tree, reaching 9 meters in height in the wild. With a thick trunk (the trunk of a mature wild tree can reach 1 meter in diameter). The trunk bark is rough and lumpy on old trunks, smoother on young branches. It has compound pinnately-divided leaves with an odd number of segments (leaflets). The leaves are leathery, with a glossy sheen; on the surface, if you look closely, you can see small transparent dots, like tiny punctures along the leaf edge. Examining the false Japanese pepper you can see samaras similar to those found on most members of the Rutaceae family. The plant has a sharp spicy scent if the leaflets are rubbed. Flowers are unisexual, dark red, small - only about 2 mm in diameter, solitary or gathered in few-flowered (no more than 6) inflorescences. Flowering in February–March.
