Nephrolepis

Back to catalogue
Family Davalliaceae. A beautiful, hardy fern, the most resilient among indoor fern species. Nephrolepis is a fast-growing plant.

The most common species are Нефролепис возвышенный - Nephrolepis exaltata with straight upright fronds up to 60 cm long, and its varieties: Нефролепис бостонский - Nephrolepis bostoniensis with simple drooping pinnate fronds, Нефролепис Пиерсони with compound pinnate fronds, etc. There are complex-pinnate fern forms where the leaflets are divided three or four times.

Nephrolepis looks good as a hanging (ampelous) plant and can be placed either in a regular pot or in a hanging basket. It is well suited for growing in lobbies and stairwells as well as in bathrooms if there is a window. Do not use chemical agents to give the leaves a shine.

Temperature: Nephrolepis is a warmth-loving fern; a temperature of about 20-22°C in summer and not below 13-15°C in winter is desirable. Does not tolerate drafts.

Light: The location for Nephrolepis should be fairly bright but shaded from direct sunlight; light partial shade is acceptable. It can also grow in fairly dark places, but the clump will then be sparse and unattractive.

Watering: Water only with settled water that does not contain lime. Water abundantly in spring and summer, moderately in winter, but the soil should remain moist at all times. Over time the crown of roots may protrude from the pot, which makes watering difficult; in that case water from the saucer.

Fertilizer: Feed with a liquid fertilizer for indoor ornamental-leaved plants from May to August every two weeks.
