Family: Poaceae. Name: derives from the Greek words 'mischos' - stalk and 'anthos' - flower, and refers to the way the spikelets are attached.

Description: the genus includes about 40 species of perennial herbaceous grasses distributed in the tropical and subtropical zones of Asia, Africa and Australia.

In the wild it is found in China, Korea and Japan.

A robust, short-rhizomed, loosely tufted perennial grass with erect stems, leafy in the lower part, up to 300 cm tall. Leaves linear, up to 1.5 cm wide, with a thick midrib, stiff and rough. Spikelets one-flowered, up to 0.7 cm long, in loose panicles with a shortened main axis. At the base of the glumes — long silky hairs; the lower glume with a geniculate awn up to 1.5 cm long. In cultivation since 1875. Winter hardiness is relative. Mulching and a dry winter cover are mandatory.
