Family Aizoaceae. Native range: South Africa, the Mediterranean, southern Australia, the Canary Islands. About 50 species occur in the wild, represented by annual or biennial herbs with erect or prostrate shoots.
Mesembryanthemum crystallinum (crystalline herb or ice herb) - Mesembryanthemum crystallinum - A bushy annual plant about 15 cm high. The lower leaves are opposite, then alternate. Leaves are fleshy, pale green, oval in shape, with a wavy margin. Stems and leaves are covered with glandular hairs - papillae resembling crystalline droplets. Flowers are bisexual, gathered in racemose inflorescences, whitish, pink, or red in color. Blooms throughout the summer until mid-autumn. Fruit — a capsule.
Temperature: Moderate. In winter a resting period at 10-12°C, minimum 8°C, under dry conditions.
Light: Full sun all the time.
Watering: Moderate during the growing season. Water very cautiously; excess water causes root rot. Watering is stopped completely during dormancy.
Fertilizer: From May to September every two weeks. Use a fertilizer for ornamental flowering plants at half the manufacturer's recommended dose.
Air humidity: These succulents tolerate dry air well, but in especially hot summer days you can mist the air around the plants with a very fine sprayer.
