Back to catalogue
Family Melastomataceae. Native to Africa, Madagascar, and the islands of the Malay archipelago. This plant, which is demanding in its cultivation requirements, has not become widespread among growers, but is beloved by enthusiasts of exotic plants. About 400 species of the genus Medinilla are known in nature, represented by shrubs and lianas.

Showy Medinilla - Medinilla magnifica - a large shrub up to 2 m tall. Woody shoots are four-angled, leaves large, opposite, up to 30 cm long, oval in shape. Leaf surface smooth, dark green above with lighter veins, slightly wavy at the margin.

The underside of the leaf is lighter. Pink flowers are gathered in many-flowered racemose inflorescences. Inflorescences are pendulous, can reach half a meter in length, and have large pink bracts.

Temperature: Develops well only in warmth; optimal temperature 22-23°C, not below 16°C in winter. Does not tolerate drafts or sharp temperature fluctuations.

Lighting: Shade from direct sunlight in summer, good lighting in winter. Medinilla is shade-tolerant, but needs sufficient light for good flowering.
