Family Salicaceae. Grows wild in northern China and northern Japan. A beautiful, large tree reaching 30 m in height with a trunk diameter up to 1 m. The trunk is covered with gray, deeply furrowed bark.

Young shoots densely pubescent, initially reddish. Buds and leaves without scent. Leaves from elliptic to ovate, with a shortly acuminate tip, dark green and glossy above, whitish beneath, up to 12 cm long, on pubescent petioles.

Hardy to frost, light-loving, undemanding regarding soil, but does not tolerate its dryness and clearly prefers sandy, well-drained soils. Grows quickly but often suffers from diseases. Tolerates transplanting and pruning easily. Suitable for group and solitary plantings in parks and parklands, as well as for street-line plantings.
