Family Rosaceae. Description: Occurs in western North America, from Alaska to California.

A tree 10-12 m in height, sometimes a shrub with bright red, later dark brown branches. Leaves ovate or oblong-ovate, up to 10 cm long, sharply serrated at the margin, often three-lobed, more or less hairy on both sides, rounded at the base. Flowers white or pale pink, up to 2.5 cm in diameter, 6-12 in umbel-shaped inflorescences. Fruits very showy — yellow with a red cheek, or red, globose-ovoid (1.8 x 1.2 cm), with deciduous sepals.
