Apple 'Florina'
Mālus Florina
Apple Florina - a popular French-bred, late-ripening cultivar. It was developed through multiple saturating crosses using the seedling Malus floribunda 821 and the cultivars Golden Delicious, Rome Beauty, Jonathan, Starking. It became widespread in Ukraine in the 1980s.
Represents a medium-vigour tree with a broadly rounded, dense crown. Scaffold branches are strong, arising from the trunk at a 45—80° angle, branch tips are upward. Bud break responsiveness is medium. Shoot formation in young trees is high. Fruiting occurs on the tips and spurs of one-year shoots.
Flowering is prolonged, mid-season. Pollen viability 78—82%. Percentage of fruit set from open pollination – 16-26%, from the best pollinators (Liberty, Priam, Rubinovoe Duki, Gloster) – 23-32%. The cultivar is incompatible with the cultivar Priscilla.
Begins bearing in the 4th-5th year after planting. In year 5 yields 5-8 kg of apples per tree, at 9-10 years – 55-63 kg per tree. Fruits are medium-sized, reach 140 g, of medium uniformity. Shape – flattened-cylindrical, ribs broad and rounded. Skin of medium thickness, dry, elastic, firm, covered with a bluish bloom. Subcutaneous speckles numerous, white, medium-sized. Ground color – light yellow with a striped diffuse blush over almost the entire fruit surface. Flesh light yellow, juicy, of medium density, mildly sweetish taste (4.1—4.4 points), aromatic. Harvest maturity – late September to early October; consumer (eating) maturity arrives in January. In storage fruits keep until March, in refrigeration – until June. Transportability high.
Winter hardiness is average
Location: site requirements are the same as for the domestic apple.
Pruning: in young age requires thinning pruning.
Diseases and pests: resistance to powdery mildew – average. The cultivar is susceptible to European canker. Fully immune to scab races 1-5.
Use: fruits are consumed fresh.
