Family Rosaceae. Description: the genus comprises 50 species growing in temperate and subtropical regions of the Northern Hemisphere.

Small fruit-and-ornamental trees up to 10 m tall, often with an irregular, rounded crown, less frequently shrubs. The trunk bark is dark gray. Leaves — elliptic or oblong-ovate, up to 10 cm long, dark green in summer, yellow or reddish in autumn. Flowers up to 3-4 cm in diameter, fragrant, white, pink, or carmine, on pubescent pedicels, collected in umbel-like inflorescences. Fruits are apple-shaped, in many species brightly colored, varying in shape and size. Inside the fruit are 5 locules formed by leathery partitions, containing seeds; the flesh develops due to the enlargement of the fleshy receptacle.
