Flowers for the garden
Dotted loosestrife
Lysimachia punctata
Family Primulaceae. In the wild it occurs in moist forests of Central and Western Europe.
This herbaceous perennial is 50-60 cm tall. It has a light-brown, long rhizome 0.3-0.5 cm thick. At the end it branches, forming a whorl of 4-6 underground shoots, each of which grows by 5-10 cm over the summer. That means that from one plant next year you will obtain a clump consisting of 4-6 new young shoots. The stem is pubescent, erect, slightly branched, and leafy. Leaves are sessile, broadly lanceolate. The lemon-yellow flowers are gathered in large numbers on the sparsely branched top of the stem. It blooms in late June–early July for 30-35 days. It thrives only in sunny sites with fertile soil. It is striking in group plantings by water bodies and in mixed borders.
