Flowers for the garden

Лопесия

Lopezia

Back to catalogue

Family Onagraceae. Grown as a cold-hardy annual. This plant usually astonishes with its unusual and charming appearance.

Its flower, measuring only 1.5 cm across, resembles the head of a little imp with a drooping nose, horns pointed upward and broad protruding ears. Another comparison is a mosquito flying straight at you. However, лопесию is not grown for its flowers, but for the highly decorative leaves that densely cover the stems, which reach about 50 cm in height.

The tips of the shoots of young plants should be regularly pinched, as this induces intensive branching. Seeds are sown in their permanent place at the end of April or seedlings are raised indoors starting in March–April. Лопесия does not like strong sun and develops better in light partial shade. Good in plantings under trees, beneath balconies, and in garden corners.

The cultivar 'Pink Brush' with salmon-lavender flowers with red markings is noted for abundant flowering.
