Alpine honeysuckle
Lonicera alpigena L.
Family: honeysuckle family. Native to the mountainous regions of Central and Southern Europe. In the understory of broad-leaved forests of the montane belt.
A low shrub up to 1.5 m high, with a very dense, spherical crown and dark green, large, thick, up to 10 cm long, almost leathery leaves, glabrous above and lighter below, with short-ciliate margins, up to 10 cm long. The flowers are scentless, paired, axillary, bilabiate, on erect flower stalks up to 4.5 cm long, dark- or greenish-yellow in color, with a dark red or brownish-red tinge on the outside. Flowering lasts 15-25 days. Its fruits are very decorative — berries, large, fused in pairs, red, shiny, resembling cherries. Thanks to these berries, which adorn the shrub for up to 1.5 months and stand out effectively against the foliage, alpine honeysuckle is considered one of the most beautiful during fruiting.
