Family: Orchidaceae. The genus includes about 15 species occurring in North America; one species is found on the Commander Islands.
Grows in bogs, in wet forests, and along streams in the temperate regions of North America and on the Commander Islands.
Plants 30–80 cm tall. Root tubers spindle-shaped. Stem densely leafy, erect. Leaves lanceolate, 7–20 cm long and 1–2.5 cm wide. Inflorescence a dense, many-flowered spike 4–20 cm long. Flowers small, 1–1.4 cm long, white. Sepals oval; lateral ones oblong-lanceolate; dorsal sepal ovate, 0.4–0.5 cm long. Lip entire, rhombic-lanceolate, obtuse, 0.5 cm long. Spur thin, cylindrical, more or less club-shaped, curved. The pollinia viscidia are naked. Ovary twisted. Flowers in mid-summer.
