Family Liliaceae. Name: the Latin name from the ancient Celtic language translates as "whiteness".

Description: the genus includes about 100 species occurring in Europe, Asia and North America.

Perennial herbaceous, bulbous plants. Bulbs are ovoid or rounded in shape, 2-20 cm in diameter, consisting of separate fleshy, non-enclosing scales that lie more or less closely against each other. Protective coverings are absent. Stems are erect, densely leafy, green, dark purple or with dark brown streaks, 30-250 cm tall, 0.3-3 cm thick. In some species, aerial bulbils develop on the stems, in the axils of the leaves — small bulbs that are used for propagation. Leaves are linear, lanceolate, linear-lanceolate or oblong-elliptic, sessile or petiolate, 2-3 to 20 cm long, arranged alternately, less often in whorls. Flowers are solitary or grouped in 2-40 in pyramidal or umbel-like inflorescences. The perianth is funnel-shaped or close to bell-shaped, turban-shaped or cup-shaped, consisting of six segments. Coloration is white, red, orange, pink, lilac or yellow, mostly with speckles, stripes or spots on the inner side of the perianth segments. Fruit - a capsule. Seeds are flat, irregularly triangular in shape, with a membranous margin.
