Appearance: large, broad shrub 3-4 m in height and width, asymmetrical, slow-growing.

Flowers: small, white raceme-like inflorescences with a strong scent, June–July.

Fruits: black glossy berries, pea-sized, poisonous.

Leaves: semi-evergreen, oval, pointed, dark green, purple-brown – in winter, they fall in spring.

Root system: superficial, wide, dense, tolerates planting in the root area around the trunk.

Requirements: sun/partial shade, relatively winter-hardy, undemanding.

Soils: any except very acidic peat substrates.
