Perennial; in favorable conditions forms substantial clumps up to 1.2 m in diameter with flowering stems up to 2 m tall. Leaves thick, leathery, rounded, dark green. Flowers large, bright yellow, arranged in raceme-like inflorescences. Flowering in August. Seeds germinate within 14-42 days, unevenly at a temperature of about 15°C. They are light-sensitive, so they are sown on the surface without covering.
