Family: Asteraceae. Name: derives from the Latin word 'ligula' - tongue, 'ligularia' - diminutive, little tongue; refers to the shape of the marginal flowers, which compared with the size of the plant are rather small, ligulate.

Description: about 150 species are known, growing in Europe, Asia and Africa. Perennial rhizomatous plants. Stems erect, up to 120 cm tall. Leaves large, up to 50 cm across, arranged alternately. Inflorescences - heads (capitula), gathered into paniculate, racemose or corymbose inflorescences, rarely solitary. Marginal flowers ligulate, yellow, orange or whitish, arranged in a single row; central ones tubular, yellow or brown. Achenes elongated.
