Appearance: strongly branched evergreen small shrub, width and height 0.5 – 1 m, shoots ascending, slow-growing.
Flowers: white, strongly scented flowers in numerous umbels, May – June.
Fruits: inconspicuous.
Leaves: evergreen, lanceolate, dark, glossy, fragrant. Leaf margins strongly turned down.
Root system: superficial, tolerates flooding, sensitive to soil compaction.
Requirements: in cool climates plant in sun; in milder climates tolerates partial shade. Prefers cool and very moist sites, generally winter-hardy and sensitive to wind.
Soils: from moist to wet, prefers acidic, wet, fairly poor soils; avoid lime.
