Legume family Name: derived from two Greek words 'la' - very and 'thuros' - attractive.

Description: the genus comprises up to 100 species occurring in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, the Mediterranean, and in the mountains of tropical South America and Africa.

Plants are annual or perennial, herbaceous. Stems simple or climbing. Leaves compound, even-pinnate with one or several pairs of leaflets, very rarely the leaflets are undeveloped. Stipules large, leaf-like. Flowers papilionaceous (butterfly-shaped), rather large, blue, violet, pink, white, yellow, red, solitary or in many-flowered racemose inflorescences. Fruit - legume (pod). 8–15 per 1 g.
