Back to catalogue

Family Betulaceae. A species of mountain slopes, glades, and well-lit places of dark-coniferous forests in the subalpine belt of Eastern Siberia, the Russian Far East, and Korea. Occurring in forest phytocenoses. A light-loving mesophyte, mesotroph, micro-mesotherm. Rare in cultivation.

A tree completely unlike our birches, up to 15 m tall. Notable is the presence of pubescence on young twigs, as well as woolly or even felted-pubescent buds. The fruiting catkins are directed upwards. Leaves broadly ovate, up to 9 cm, sparsely hairy along the veins on the upper surface. Belongs to the most cold-hardy deciduous species. In ornamental and silvicultural properties it is similar to the stone birch. Recommended for use in solitary and group plantings in gardens and parks.
