Family: grasses. Native to southern and eastern Europe to Siberia.

Ornamental perennial grass. Growth habit tufted, with erect stems. Leaf narrow, linear, early to unfold. Height 140-180 cm. Inflorescences: creamy-white, in feathery panicles. Blooms in July - August. After flowering the panicles close up and turn yellow along with the stems. They remain attractive throughout the winter, enlivening the snowy garden landscape. Unlike wild reed grasses, cultivated varieties do not have underground runners and are not aggressive in colonizing new areas.
