Family Fabaceae Native to the European part of Russia, the Mediterranean, Asia Minor.

An elegant perennial plant up to 200 cm tall with fragrant, dark-pink flowers and tuberous, oblong-oval rhizomes up to 4 cm long and 1.5 cm thick. Leaves small, ovate-lanceolate, paired, ending in a branched tendril. Blooms from late June to mid-August. Produces fruit. Fruit - a pod, sometimes hairy, seeds oblong, dark gray. Due to its root system it spreads vigorously, sometimes displacing other plants.

Easily propagated by division of rhizomes and by seeds. Can be used as a perennial "sweet pea".
