Family Asteraceae. Native to the southeastern regions of North America.

Perennial, rhizomatous, herbaceous plant. Stems simple up to 50 cm tall, very leafy. Leaves linear. Heads small, 8-13-flowered, gathered in a spike-like inflorescence up to 35 cm long. Flowers tubular only, purple-red, less often white. Blooms in June-July for 35-40 days. Fruits. In cultivation since 1732.
