Family Malvaceae. Occurs in southern Scandinavia and northern Europe.

Forms dense tufts. Leaves of sterile shoots 5-12 cm long, straight or slightly sickle-shaped, glaucous, rigid, slightly rolled. Panicles cylindrical, lobed, spikelets 4-5 cm. Prefers sandy soils and dry sunny locations. Can be used for solitary plantings and creating rock gardens. Propagated by seeds and by division of clumps. Hardy. Needs good drainage, otherwise it becomes waterlogged.

Description: The genus includes more than 300 species that are distributed throughout the world, except for polar regions. All species have similar cultivation requirements and are promising for ornamental horticulture.
