Kigelia - sausage tree

Kigelia pinnata

Back to catalogue

Family Bignoniaceae. It is distributed in tropical Africa and Madagascar.

The plant is known as "the sausage tree" because of a heavy crop of large long fruits (up to half a meter in length and up to 10 cm thick) that hang on long fruit stalks. The fruits are inedible. In Africa, extracts from the bark and fruits are used in folk medicine due to a cytotoxic effect: as an antibacterial agent and for combating skin cancer.

Kigelia - sausage tree

When cultivating, the following points should be noted: in the wild it is quite a large tree, reaching 10–12 meters in height and with a wide crown up to 6–9 meters. When cultivated, full sun is preferable. The plant can withstand light frosts. Therefore it can be recommended for growing in conservatories and well-lit halls.
