Family Poaceae. Native to Eastern Siberia, the Far East, and North America.

Perennial herb up to 60 cm tall with erect, sparsely leaved stems bearing inflorescences of small, scale-like flowers. Grows in tufts from basal, small, silky leaves. Leaf blade narrow, no more than 0.3 cm wide. Single-flowered spikelets are grouped in threes in a compound spike up to 7 cm long. Spikelet scales thin, spreading; the lower floral scale with a long red‑violet awn up to 9 cm long. Fruit - caryopsis. Decorative for about 60 days. In cultivation since 1782.
