Family Iridaceae A cormous perennial 30–50 cm tall with narrow leaves, arranged in two ranks.

Flowers funnel-shaped, sometimes with a narrow tube, of various colors with a dark-red or brown center, grouped in 6-12 into a spike- or raceme-like inflorescence on a leafless scape. Blooms in early spring for about three weeks. In cultivation since 1770.

It has numerous cultivars with flowers of various colors. Usually sold as a mixture, but recently planting material selected by flower color has become available.
