Flowers for the garden
Whitish iris
Iris albicans Lange
Family cruciferous. Originates from the Arabian Peninsula, where it has been cultivated since time immemorial by Arabs as a perennial for home gardens and cemeteries. From the Arabs it passed to the Spaniards and has spread widely in the Mediterranean countries. It is one of the progenitors of the medium-sized cultivars of I. hybrida hort.

Close to I. germanica. It is distinguished by a shorter flower stalk, broad basal leaves that by the end of the growing season become somewhat twisted along their length, and by the shape of the outer lobes of the perianth: on a fresh flower they appear pointed because of the inwardly rolled tips of their blades (a species characteristic). The flower color is predominantly white, however one form of this species has crimson-purple flowers. 2n=44. Distinguished by very early flowering, a strong love of warmth, and low winter hardiness.
