Family Asteraceae. Occurs in deciduous and light pine forests, in meadows, on meadow and steppe slopes, and along riverbanks in Europe, the Caucasus and Siberia.

The plant is perennial. Unlike the previous species, it forms a cylindrical bush up to 2.5 m tall. The robust rhizome has a strong odor. Basal and lower stem leaves are large, oblong-elliptic, 40-50 cm long, 15-20 cm wide. From the middle of the stem the leaves are sessile, with cordate stem-clasping bases. The flower heads are golden-yellow, up to 8 cm in diameter, on thick short peduncles in the axils of bracteal leaves, gathered in sparse panicles. It blooms in July-August for 30-35 days. Seeds ripen in August-September. Cultivated since ancient times.
