Family: Asteraceae. This perennial is often found on mountainous chalk and limestone slopes, in light forests on mountain slopes and in mixed-herb and grass steppes of Europe and the Caucasus.
Low, 15-30 cm high, a compact plant with numerous thin sturdy stems, weakly branched in the upper part. Leaves narrow, lanceolate, up to 6 cm long, all sessile. Flower heads usually solitary, 2-4 cm in diameter; ligulate (ray) and tubular (disc) flowers yellow. Blooms abundantly from early July to late August. Seeds ripen in late August - September. In cultivation since 1793. Has a compact variety (var. compacta hort.) up to 20 cm high, flowering abundantly and for a long time.
