Family Balsaminaceae. The name of the genus comes from the Latin words im (in) - not, without and patiens - bearing, enduring pressure: referring to the ability of the ripe fruits to burst open at the slightest touch.

About 500 species of annual and perennial herbaceous plants and subshrubs, distributed mainly in the subtropics and tropics of Asia and Africa.
