Appearance: large shrub, 2-4 m tall, 2-3 m wide, conical, open or broadly upright in habit, compact, slow-growing.
Fruits: light red, extremely numerous, poisonous.
Leaves: evergreen, oval or narrowly ovate, glossy, dark green, with a blackish tinge in winter, soft, leathery, margins of young leaves spiny.
Root system: deep, wide.
Requirements: sun/partial shade, prefers warmth, relatively winter-hardy.
Soils: from fresh to moist, from acidic to slightly alkaline, well-drained, sandy, humus-rich substrates.
Zone: 6b
