Flowers for the garden
Hawkweed
Hieracium
Family Asteraceae. Genus includes many species that are very difficult to distinguish in the wild - they are so similar. Moreover, there are many intermediate types and fertile hybrids. They grow in Europe and Asia.
Most plants are tomentose or glandular, with leaves gathered in a basal rosette. Terminal inflorescences consist only of ligulate flowers, mainly white and only rarely orange or red. The fruit is an elongated achene with pubescence.
Location and soil: Hawkweeds are easily grown in ordinary garden soil. Although in nature some species are confined to calcareous substrate, in the rock garden acidic soil will also do. Plant them in a sunny spot in dry rocky soil.

Propagation: easily by division or by seeds - they give good germination. Self-seeding often occurs.
