Family Saxifragaceae. Name: in honor of the German professor of medicine and botany J.H. von Heucher.
The genus includes about 70 species distributed in North America.
Rhizomatous perennial herbaceous plants up to 50 cm tall. Leaves are arranged in a basal rosette, five- to nine-lobed, toothed. Plants produce numerous flowering stems that grow and flower at different times. Flowers are small, pink, red, white, gathered in a panicle up to 20 cm long. Fruit is a capsule. Up to 20,000 seeds per gram.
Breeding is carried out in two directions:
development of new forms and leaf coloration; improvement of the inflorescence, size and coloration of the flowers.
