Indoor plants
Hemigraphis
Hemigraphis
Family Acanthaceae. Native to the tropics of Asia and Australia. These are herbaceous perennial plants, fairly shade-tolerant but demanding in indoor cultivation. About 100 species occur in nature.
Hemigraphis alternata - with prostrate and easily rooting stems. Leaves opposite, ovate, cordate at the base and toothed along the margin, with pubescent petioles. Leaf surface smooth, upper side green with red veins, underside purple. Flowers small and white, borne in loose terminal spikes. Notably, the leaves in semi-shade have a greenish-silver tint, while in bright diffused light they acquire a metallic sheen.
Hemigraphis repanda - very similar to the previous species, but has narrower leaves with a toothed margin.
Temperature: Hemigraphis is warmth-loving and prefers temperatures not to fall below 16°C. Optimal in winter 17-18°C, in summer 20-25°C.
Lighting: Hemigraphis does not tolerate direct midday sun; the best location is bright diffused light or light partial shade. Hemigraphis grows well on an east-facing windowsill.
Watering: Abundant from spring to autumn, moderate in winter. Hemigraphis does not tolerate drying out of the root ball, and excess water can lead to the plant's death.
