Family: Poaceae. Native to the western Mediterranean and the Alps. Mountain slopes up to 2400 m in elevation.

The tallest of the perennial grasses with a blue sheen. Root system fibrous, deeply set. Growth habit: compact, a 30-50 cm high clump; on favorable soil it spreads to 1 m in diameter. Leaves narrow, linear, from gray-green to blue-gray in color. Inflorescences gray-green, in narrow, soft panicles on an erect stem up to 150 cm. Blooms in July.
